The Heart of Winter

Who, What, Where, When, Why?

Dorrin lies on Logue’s work table. He will live thanks to Kriv’s swift reaction and athletic ability. Now the question is what are we dealing with? Where did they come from and more importantly are they coming to the camp? What is it that they want? Questions need answering, and it is up to the heroes to investigate this new threat.

What the hell was that!?

While hunting for game at a nearby watering hole, Kilee went from being the huntress to the hunted. Thankfully Kriv and Dorrin arrived and supplied her with much needed aid. The strange creatures that ambushed her were somewhere between insect and reptile. Needless to say these are not only aggressive beasts but wholly unnatural. During the fight Dorrin suffered a grievous wound, now it is a race for survival to get him back to the camp where hopefully someone will be able to save him. What of the creatures? Where did they come from? Where were they going? Are there more?

Staking out the camp

The early days of the hunt found our party staking out the abandoned fort. While nothing has been turned up yet it was learned that the fort once belonged to the dwarves of the valley and used as a shipping destination for the dwarves of the Rockhymn mines. It is said that ore was shipped to this location and others via a series of tunnels that spider web beneath the valley floor. No one knows the current condition of the tunnels or what has taken up residence since the dwarves’ departure many years ago.

The Adventure Begins
The town of Rakham sits on the valley floor at the base of a tall cliff. It is the middle of summer, though you wouldn’t know it if you were to step outside. Winter seems to have come a full six months early. The sky is grey and dim, as cold winds move the branches of the surrounding trees. Crops have begun to die and game is becoming scarce as they now seek the refuge of warmer climates. Food stores are becoming dangerously low as they have had little opportunity to be replenished. If measures aren’t taken soon the coming months could be grim indeed. Alton the village elder has decided that a hunting party should be sent out beyond the village’s normal hunting grounds to seek areas where the game is more bountiful. As the village’s most capable warriors you have been sent along with four others to gather and bring back the much needed food. It has been two weeks since your party left the village, and as you traveled east across the valley the temperature began to rise and the world seemed to once again be warmed by the summer sun. On your travels you came to a ruined fort once used as a supply base for an army long gone from this world. Bramd, son of Alton and the leader of the hunting party, has decided that this would make for an excellent base camp from which to hunt the surrounding area.
